Exercise not only changes your body, it changes your mind, attitude and mood.
The meaning of the word Yoga is "unite". Yoga unites the mind and the body through breath. Through breath control, physical postures and philosophy, one can create a sense of relaxation and peace in life. Most Historians agree that Yoga began around 5,000 years ago in Northern India. It made it's first and very brief appearance in the U.S. in the late 1800's in Chicago for a World Fair. It became more popular during the 1970's out of Encinitas. Many consider Encinitas to be the birth place of Yoga in the West.
Yoga is a very powerful practice of transformation. The physical practice transforms your body. Many use Yoga as a fitness vehicle to shed unwanted pounds and stay physically fit. However, the core teachings of Yoga integrates the mind and soul as well. When practicing the traditional teachings of Yoga, one can experience transformation physically AND mentally.
My Yoga journey began in 1999 in Encinitas. I studied Ashtanga Yoga under Troy Taylor, who studied directly under K. Pattabhi Jois. I had a regular practice for years. As I became a wife and mother, I took both Prenatal and Mommy & Me Yoga under Liz Janda, still within the North County San Diego area. Once I finally answered my calling to teach, I did my Yoga Teacher Training at a Hot Yoga studio, with a style based on Core Power. The heat of Hot Yoga with dim lights brought a whole new dimension of focus and growth to my practice. Although I enjoy Yoga in all forms, I find the Hot Yoga benefits my arthritis and mental focus greatly. I teach many disciplines of Yoga including: Prenatal, Yin, Restorative, Vinyasa Flow and Hot Yoga.
